"Mickey's Good Deed" (1932)

I had searched YouTube for a winter classic short and “Mickey’s Good Deed” (1932) popped up.  One of the black and white classics that I haven’t seen yet!

Beginning with the somber, wintery scene of Mickey and Pluto singing and playing for change, the tale isn’t exactly the Christmas cheer that we are looking for, is it?  Both are hungry and just hoping to get by.  It’s actually quiet depressing because we then come to find that there’s a house full of orphaned kittens that might not have a happy holiday either.

Though the short is called “Mickey’s Good Deed”, the real hero of the tale is Pluto!  He goes through so much in order for the kittens to have Christmas presents.  Sold by his best friend, bullied by a spoiled brat, and kicked out in the snow?  Dogs are much better creatures than us, because Pluto still found his way back to Mickey – all was forgiven!

The vagabonds’ situation hasn’t really changed for the better.  They are still living on the streets, without a way of making any money.  Maybe it’s just the realist in me, but I really worry for Mickey and Pluto!  Where’s the plan? What next?

At least, thankfully, Mickey and Pluto have a happy Christmas dinner.  There's something about animated turkey legs that look so delicious.
