Season 3, Episode 11: “Roughin’ It” 1//16
Starring: Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy
Setting: Yosemite National Park, CA
Plot: The gang goes camping and, while Mickey wants to rough it, Donald and Goofy find comfort in the lap of luxury.
Is this our first kinetic title card?
The waterfall in the opening shot is similar enough to Yosemite Falls to put the location in the national park for which the falls are named.
The wardrobe department did an excellent job here. I’m especially digging Goofy’s sock and Birkenstock combo along with his ‘coon skin cap!
I love the décor of Donald’s RV with its modern art, bean bag and hand chair. And, even amidst all the modern technology, he still has a vinyl record collection!
Donald turning the Power Supply to “11” is an obvious reference to the classic mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap (1984).
Donald calls Mickey a “hippie.” LOLZ!
Has there been a more savage moment than Mickey riding the back of a grizzly bear while wielding an axe???
When the RV goes mad and gains a face, he resembles the angry furnace from Season Two’s Boiler Room.
I love how Donald sweetly and sheepishly thanks Mickey for saving his and Goofy’s lives.
Final Grade: B+
I know I’m starting to sound like a grouch but there were just so many missed opportunities here. You’d think that in a camping episode that there would be room for appearances from Chip ‘N’ Dale, Humphrey the Bear or even film cameo from Bambi and his pals. Heck, I even thought there might be a chance that we’d see a reference to, perhaps my favourite short of all time, Mickey’s Trailer (1938). However, despite all of my grousing, this was a really good short! It was an especially good showing for Donald who has, IMHO, really struggled to find a voice in the series. He was at his selfish, yet sweet, best! Also, I really dug the animation here – lots of good shots.
We love Disney. Period.
