Season 5, Episode 19: “Roll ‘Em” 7/14/2018 Starring: Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Cameos by: The King, The Sheriff’s Archers, and Martian Mastermind Setting: Hollywood, CA Plot: As a production assistant, Mickey finds himself chasing a runaway film reel through various movie sets on the studio lot. Short Stuff We first saw the King in the 1938 classic short, The Brave Little Tailor. Of all the many characters from Robin Hood (1972), the pack of wolf archers would’ve been my last guess of who would receive a cameo. The elephant director is so rotund he needs a seat for each cheek. That alien monster fighting the badass chick is Martian Mastermind whose lone appearance is from a 1959 episode of Disneyland called “Mars and Beyond.” Mickey uses a Donald Duck inner tube. The movies Mickey and Minnie run through look to be parodying the following classic films: Superman (1978) Alien (1979) Footlight Parade (1933) King Kong (1933) Ben Hur (1955) Two of the aforementioned movies appear in The Great Movie Ride (1989 - 2017) - an attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. This is significant because the ride is being replaced by a Mickey Mouse themed attraction called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Mickey and Minnie barrelling their way through multiple movie sets on a studio lot had to have been inspired by a similar sequence from Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (1985) where Pee-Wee does pretty much the same thing on the Warner Bros. lot. Final Grade: B+
It’s hard to believe that this is the series’ first stab at lampooning Hollywood. Even then, it’s a pretty toothless parody that’s really more of a tribute to The Great Movie Ride than anything else. It’s a still a fun enough trek through some of the classics from the movie industry.
