Season 5, Episode 5: “Hats Enough” 12/7/18
Starring: Mickey Mouse
Costarring: Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, and Pete
Setting: Around Town
Plot: Realizing that all of his friends identify with their signature hats, Mickey goes in search of his own.
The hat Minnie finds at Hats Incredible is nearly identical except for one small detail: the flower in her hat has five petals while the one at the store has six.
The biker gang from “Road Hogs” (S3, E9) makes an appearance after Mickey dons the horned motorcycle helmet.
Mickey acting disgusted by the gas mask could be in reference to the infamous Mickey Mouse Gas Masks that were created for children to wear in case of bombings during World War II.
The sequence with Mickey driving a boat before getting walloped by Pete is a clear reference to Steamboat Willie (1928).
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice scene kind of ruins the premise of the short since Mickey’s blue sorcerer’s hat is iconic and one that is very closely identified with him.
The part where Mickey is eating lunch with the construction workers is a not-so-subtle nod to the famous photo, Lunch atop a Skyscraper (1932), where eleven men are seen sitting atop a girder with their feet dangling seemingly high above New York City while eating lunch.
Final Grade: C+
That was a loooong way in going to articulate how awesome, amazing, iconic, and original Mickey Mouse’s ears are. Hopefully this ends the run of three pretty unremarkable shorts in a row. Again, I realize this is the Mickey Mouse series but featuring some other characters every once in a while would go a long way in providing a fresher or more creative perspective to some of these episodes.
