Disney Short: Gasp (A Waltz Through Disney Blog)
Season 1, Episode 7: “Gasp” 7/26/13
Starring: Mickey Mouse

Introducing: Gubbles
Co-Starring: Figaro
Setting: Mickey’s Apartment
Plot:
Mickey is teaching his pet fish, Gubbles, some tricks when he realizes that he’s too big for his bowl and it’s time to order a new one.  Once Figaro, a stray cat hanging out on the balcony, overhears Mickey say “big fishy,” his ears perk up and he climbs through the window to try to catch Gubbles.

In Mickey’s haste to chase Figaro out of the apartment, he knocks over Gubbles’ fish bowl.  Mickey then rushes a gasping Gubbles to the kitchen to try and find him water.  In the meantime, Gubbles manages to deep fry himself in bread and butter and Mickey has to resuscitate the nearly cooked fish. Gubbles eventually lands in the bathroom where Mickey begins to draw him a bath until Figaro jumps back in through a window to snatch up the fish and swallow him whole.  An irate Mickey chases Figaro until he realizes that the only way to get Gubbles out is to get his dog treats and call on him to do some tricks.  Gubbles sits and rolls over his way out of Figaro’s belly in time to catch the dog treat Mickey tosses to him and chases Figaro out the window like the dog fish he is.

Gubbles is really near death now but Mickey left the tub running and the water bursts through the door and fills up the entire apartment giving Gubbles the bigger bowl he needed all along.

Short Stuff:
I think the first reaction people have after watching this short is “Where’s Pluto???”

He’s never referred to as “Figaro” by name but it’s a safe assumption considering the way he’s drawn and the cat’s storied history in the classic Disney shorts.

Nautical clues of what’s to come are scattered throughout Mickey’s apartment like a sailboat, a life preserver (that says S.S. Minnie!) and an anchor.

Mickey has a picture of a Tiki on his wall… perhaps a souvenir from the Tiki Room???  Probably not.

The sequence where Gubbles breads and fries himself made me legit lol out loud!

Blink and you’ll miss it: there’s a framed picture of Minnie in the hallway.
Final Grade: C
The only thing saving this one from getting a C- is the VERY funny sequence where Gubbles stumbles into one ingredient after the next and nearly cooks himself.  Other than that… it was nice to see Figaro!  Although, his and Gubbles’ appearance only exacerbates the fact that we have yet to see Pluto.  And, with the scope of settings and exotic locales we’ve been traveling to, it really feels claustrophobic to spend a whole three-and-a-half minutes in Mickey’s apartment.
