The Hockey Champ (1939)
Starring: Donald Duck, Hewey, Dewey and Louie
Setting: Duck Swamp
Plot: Accomplished skater and hockey player Donald attempts to teach his nephews the finer points of the game.
Donald is so taken with his own gracefulness as a skater that he fashions the feathers on his head to look like famed Norwegian skater and actress Sonja Henie.
I’m a big fan of Donald’s white hat, black bowtie combo and much prefer it to his contemporary blue hat and red tie look.
The nephews voices are noticeably different here than in later shorts.
As evident by his trophy, Donald’s skills are legit: he’s the “Hockey Champion of Duck Swamp”!
Donald and his nephews each coordinate the tape on their sticks with the respective colours of their outfits.
In a particularly ghoulish scene, Donald ends up hanging himself with the rope in a well… oh well.
During the course of the game, Donald transforms into a locomotive, the devil and a cuckoo clock.
Final score of the match: Nephews 1, Donald 0.
Putting a Bow on It:
Donald’s nephews once again get the better of him as his arrogance and cockiness serve as his downfall. Then again, he is playing one against three and that’s a pretty tall measure… “Hockey Champion” or not. I still believe Donald is just a playful sort above all else. Sure, he gets a little carried away at times but at least he actually spends time with his nephews.
