Donald’s Snow Fight (1942)
Starring: Donald Duck, Huey, Dewey and Louie
Plot: It’s all-out war as Donald instigates a snow fight with his nephews.
Donald sings “Jingle Bells” while wearing a bell-shaped fur coat and schlepping his sled up the hill.
As per usual, Donald is the agitator and fires the “first shot” while his nephews are minding their own business, building a snowman.
Huey (red) and Louie (green) are wearing their traditional colours while Dewey is in orange - as was his wont before moving onto his trademark blue he began wearing in DuckTales (1987-90).
Here, Huey assumes his normal role as leader of the trio in hatching the plan to get back at Donald.
In a bit of a role reversal,* Donald captains an ice ship donning an admiral’s bicorn while the nephews defend their ice castle with the Jolly Roger flying overhead.
*The pirates would normally be attacking the fort.
While the nephews take their licks, the boys prove to be even more ruthless and tactically sound than the more aggressive Donald.
Putting a Bow on It:
This short proves that brutal violence, even as doled out by an adult to children, can still be hilarious. While the warmth that often thaws the uncle and nephew’s icy contentiousness isn’t evident here, the playful nature of their “war” is enough to warm the holiday cockles.
