On Ice (1935)
Starring: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Pluto
Cameos By: Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow
Setting: A Frozen Lake
Plot: Mickey teaches Minnie to ice skate, Goofy goes ice fishing and Donald pulls a prank on Pluto.
This is the first short to feature the “Fabulous Five” (Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto).
Right after Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow appear, an older Goofy-looking dog using a walker could be seen “skating” across the ice.
Putting a Bow on It:
In a true ensemble piece where all of the individual storylines intersect, the Goofy sequence stands out as my own personal favourite (of course!). I’m especially fond of any time Goofy’s Southern yokel roots are featured and, ice fishing using tobacco, a spittoon and a club certainly qualify as “yokelish” behavior. It all comes around in the end too as an underwater Donald surfaces through Goofy’s fishing hole only to get clubbed over the head by the flabbergasted dog who exclaims “Gosh, I thought you was a fish!”
