Hockey Homicide (1945)
A Cameo By: Monstro the Whale
Setting: Elite Deluxe Sports Palace
Plot: The Goofs attempt to teach us the finer points from the sport of hockey.
Despite its title, no deaths occur in this cartoon.
The narrator is famed comedian Doodles Weaver.
The original matchup pits the Moose versus the Pelicans but the teams are quickly replaced by the Loose Leafs and Ant Eaters.
The two stars of their respective teams are wingers Ice Box Bertino (Loose Leafs) and Fearless Ferguson (Ant Eaters).
Each player appearing on the scorecard (including the referee, Clean Game Kinney) is named for various people who work for Disney
The Loose Leafs wear two-toned green sweaters while the Ant Eaters don red and gold.
The action becomes so chaotic that snippets from other Disney films and shorts appear such as Pinocchio (1940), How to Play Football (1944), How to Play Baseball (1942) and Victory Through Air and Power (1943).
Putting a Bow on It:
As a HUGE fan of Goofy, I’ve never particularly liked the “everybody is Goofy” series of shorts. It just waters down an otherwise great character and strips him of his identity. In a vacuum these cartoons are funny but, for all intents and purposes, it’s not “Goofy.” On another note, including a clip of Monstro the whale may be the most random moment in any Disney short I can remember seeing and I LOVED it!
