Donald on Ice (1999)
Starring: Donald Duck, Hewey, Dewey and Louie
Setting: A Snowy Park
Plot: Hewey, Dewey and Louie enter a Snowman Building Contest. But when Donald inadvertently yet unapologetically smashes their creation, the nephews decide to get revenge on their rude uncle.
This short originally aired in Mickey Mouse Works.
Much like Mickey’s Christmas Chaos (2000), this is another contest themed short.
Wherein The Hockey Champ (1939) Donald is an almost Olympic caliber ice skater but, here, he can barely stand on the ice. A lot can change in sixty years…
Donald’s coat bears a striking resemblance to the one he wore in Donald’s Snow Fight (1942).
The Abominable Snowman is not a missing link, Yeti type creature but an actual snowman.
I don’t understand the part where the Abominable Snowman can win a snowman building contest to the point where he goes home with the prize.
Putting a Bow on It:
Maybe I’m just a hipster but these Mickey Mouse Works cartoons are just missing something. It’s not a question of modernity either because I love the even newer Mickey Mouse series of shorts that I’ve been reviewing on the blog. In comparing the two it might be because the Mickey Mouse Works cartoons are more-or-less trying to recreate the classic shorts while the Mickey Mouse series is presenting something entirely fresh and new. To be fair, this is only the second one that I’ve taken a hard look at after Mickey’s Christmas Crisis so maybe others actually offer something I’m not seeing here.
We love Disney. Period.
