Polar Trappers (1938)
Starring: Donald Duck and Goofy
Setting: An amalgamation of the North and South Poles
Plot: Donald, growing tired of beans, attempts to catch a penguin while Goofy tracks down a walrus.
This is the first short that Donald and Goofy appear in sans Mickey.
It’s also the first of seven in the “Donald and Goofy Series.”
As the Sign reads: “Donald & Goofy Trapping Co. ‘We Bring ‘Em Back Alive”… PETA would be proud.
In Goofy’s song we learn the duo traps walrus, bear, seal and caribou.
In reality, penguins (South Pole) and walruses (North Pole) would never live in the same place.
Both trappers employ disguises to capture their prey. Donald dons a tuxedo while Goofy wears a walrus moustache and tusks.
After icicles rain down on Goofy, he emerges as an icy Statue of Liberty.
Putting a Bow on It:
I just love these two together! I wish I could’ve been a fly on the wall when Donald and Goofy had the discussion where they decided to move to the North/South Pole and go into the Trapping business together. I’m guessing that Donald hatched the plan and Goofy is just good-natured and naïve enough to go along with it. That’s why Mickey wasn’t included… he’s the only one smart/boring enough to say “no.”
