14 Shades of Disney, Shade 11: Pluto's Heart Throb
Shade #11: Pluto’s Heart Throb (1950)

Starring: Pluto, Dinah the Dachshund and Butch the Bulldog
Setting: Around Town

Plot: Pluto has got the hots for Dinah but also has to compete with Butch for her affections.

Box of Chocolates:

Before Pluto was struck over the head by Cupid Dog’s bow, he gave Dinah a look of aggressive disinterest - bordering on disgust.

Butch, who often plays Pluto’s nemesis, first appeared in 1940s’s Bone Trouble.

Did Butch know Dinah from before?  Are they currently in a relationship?  It’s unclear.

Either way, Dinah was clearly inviting and encouraging the competition for her.  Whatever that Cupid Dog did to her, it wore off pretty quick while Pluto is still completely love struck.

The Morning After:

Dinah is awful.  Pluto knew it too.  That’s probably why he gave her that look before the Cupid Dog put Pluto under its spell.  Sure, Pluto “won” out in the end but look at his competition – an ugly brute of a bulldog.  Plus, did he really win?  How long will it be before Dinah plays that same game again where she invites competition while reveling in all the attention it garners?  I’ve been in that position before and it’s HORRIBLE. Competing for a girl is like the Super Bowl: winning doesn’t feel half as good as losing feels bad.
