Night 2: The Gorilla Mystery (1930)
Starring: Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse
Co-starring: Beppo the Gorilla
Setting: Minnie’s House
Plot: A gorilla escapes from the zoo and immediately kidnaps Minnie (of course). Can Mickey save her?
Tricks and/or Treats:
Minnie owns companion bookends in her and Mickey’s respective likenesses.
She also has a framed picture of Mickey hanging on the wall.
This is the first of three appearances for Beppo. He would go on to antagonize Mickey and Minnie in Mickey’s Mechanical Man (1933) and the Pet Store (1933).
Beppo at least has the sense of decorum to hang up the phone when he’s done using it.
Minnie’s house is HUUUGE. How many bedrooms does she have?
She also owns a bunch of animals – a duck, a whole chicken coop and a parrot!
Does Minnie chew? There’s a full spittoon in the parrot’s room.
Mickey’s packing heat! He defends himself against Beppo with a cuckoo gun!
Where’s the “Mystery?” The gorilla escapes, Minnie is kidnapped and Mickey immediately suspects Beppo. There’s not a lot of intrigue there.
Sure, this one is scary… especially the scene where poor Mickey is left helpless on the other side of the phone while listening to his girlfriend being abducted. But the story here is Minnie. What’s her deal??? She’s got this huge house, a chicken coop and a full spittoon! It makes no sense!!!
