Night 6: Lonesome Ghosts (1937)
Starring: Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy
Setting: A Haunted House
Plot: Some lonesome ghosts looking for people to scare, lure the Ajax Ghost Exterminators to their home.
Tricks and/or Treats:
This is the eighth of ten cartoons in the “Mickey, Donald and Goofy” series.
Mickey’s ghost chasing tool of choice is a rifle, Donald’s a net and Goofy’s an axe.
This short features Donald in my own personal favourite outfit of his: white hat with black bowtie.
A version of Goofy’s line “I aint a scared of no ghosts” was used as one of the taglines for the movie Ghostbusters (1984).
This short may very well have been the inspiration for the entire Ghostbusters franchise.
The cartoon is still relevant today as Disneyland sells souvenir travel mugs during Halloween time with Mickey, Donald and Goofy in their Ajax attire along with the three Lonesome Ghosts.
This one is a classic among classics and one of the better known Disney shorts. The premise of spooks having no one to scare so they call a ghost catching company is genius. And, after being so heavy on Mickey early on in our Halloween series, it’s nice to see him share the screen with Donald and Goofy. They are a fantastic trio and Goofy, in particular, shines during his battle with the ghost in the wardrobe.
