Ah, Dumbo. I can’t love this movie enough! This sweet, good-natured baby/toddler elephant overcomes adversity to create his own path in life, and more importantly, get his mother back. Maybe it’s the “mommy” part of me, but I still cry when I watch it.
Actually, I cry twice. The first cry is, of course, during the “Baby of Mine” scene (and if you don’t even remotely tear up, you may as well have no soul). The second is during his climactic flight at the circus. I love this scene! Just when we all think he has lost all confidence – even Timothy Mouse desperately pleads with him to believe – Dumbo pulls up at the last second, in one of the most satisfying, heart-warming endings Disney has ever given us. (Want to know a secret? I just choked back my tears writing this little summary.) This is the scene I want to capture. It will be the first watercolor painting for the blog, but is still in the beginning sketches, so please pardon the tardiness of this piece. However, here are a couple of digital works to tide you over.
